In this unique location between town and vineyard, our landscape design approach is rooted in the heritage of the project site and inspired by its enclosed gardens. The grounds for this new residential complex feature inviting ornamental gardens and gathering spaces for residents, while expanding and maintaining public access to the municipal historic trail. The majority of the site makes use of existing soil infrastructure for in-ground planting. Planting grapevines boosts rainwater infiltration capacity, via the vines’ deep root systems. Three distinct and complementary spaces are woven together. In the Historic Garden, the legibility and cross-shaped layout are restored. Here, a wide variety of planted spaces and species mingle, uniting grassy clearings, cropland, flowering meadows, orchards, and vineyards. The Gardened Courtyards evolve from their former hardscape surfaces, once again embracing a simple geometric layout that now incorporates picnic tables, benches, bike access, and more. The Parking Area Orchard is modeled after enclosed orchards. Here, several species of flowering fruit trees fill the space with biodiversity and lush natural beauty. The generous tree layer enables cars and vehicles to blend seamlessly into this protected site, while the gravel surfacing of the parking spaces increases permeability.
