The Toulouse-Matabiau train station is located along the Canal du Midi canal, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and near the historic city center. Our redesign transforms the train station plaza into an inviting gateway into the Toulouse Metropolitan Area. The planted environment in Toulouse is deeply informed by a number of key geographic and historical elements. The river, canal, and former ramparts have shaped the landscape of this city, uniting waterways, trees, and infrastructure to create an extraordinary symbiotic harmony between the planted and urban environments. Our project is designed to accommodate heavy foot traffic throughout the plaza. Adding new plantings, as well as contemporary and welcoming street furniture, increases legibility site-wide. The outdoor lighting features a nod to the Occitan cross: six large, striking street lights frame the redeveloped plaza and suffuse the site with modernity. By using high-quality local building materials, like Tarn granite and French oak, and expanding the greenery, our design cultivates a landscape in tune with the movement of the canal. More intimate spaces along the canal offer pedestrians and cyclists the opportunity to rediscover the waterway – a breath of fresh air in the metropolitan area.
