With its garden established in the 1850s around a central basin, Square de la Couronne has long enjoyed the role of being an important city intersection. Surrounded by hotels, it served as the point of departure first for coaches, eventually for intercity buses, and today for metropolitan buses. Little by little, its space has been hemmed in between a low wall and poor quality shrubs.
Proceeding in the opposite direction of this historical enclosure, we decided to open up the square's central space, demarcated by rows of steps and by large plane trees native to the region, by planting shrubs around the central basin, placing it within a thick carpeted setting of low bushes.
The intervention is deliberate in its pared down and particularly mineral approach, with the minimalism of the foundational groundwork making up the essential component. The surrounding steps, which determine the boundaries of the ground, delineate the area without enclosing it.
