The new city of Lusail, located north of Doha, should, when completed, welcome two hundred thousand residents. The city continues today in its quest to create a high quality living environment, coupling in its planning designs landscape and urban reflections, and promoting the implementation of extensive programmatic diversity. The development plan is also based upon a configuration of public spaces, large boulevards and gardens. It uses as its basis the idea of the “city as park”, which allows for the better anticipation of possible expansions in building by vegetal boundaries, as well as for the immediate creation of a unified landscape. The attentive observation of the diverse and rich landscapes of Qatar led us to intervene with connection with the geographical context. The project aimed at strengthening the identity of the territory's landscape through the utilization of plant and mineral types found throughout the coastal and desert areas that encircle the city, to the east and west respectively. Empty spaces are left within the spatial configuration, as traces transposed from the desert. Agricultural plots of land reshape the fringes of the city. Inspired by traditional cultivated gardens, these food-producing spaces rely upon the available water resources to render the urban periphery both functional and ornamental.
