Situated at the heart of a vast coastal area, this seaside resort lies between two estuaries and within a forest, which gives it an almost insular character and great diversity. The aim is to create a clear spatial organisation on the scale of this overall geography. The redevelopment and transformation of the seafront are based on the creation of an urban beach bordered by a generously proportioned promenade. Across the width of the site, the coastal landscape is enhanced through a broad sequence of successive layers: the sea, the beach, planted and protected dunes, and a higher-level walkway for pedestrians and cyclists, before finally reaching the carriageway. These levels are connected by staircases, long jetties and walkways running along the coast. Various terraces overlook the sea, offering views of the vast horizon. Groups of plantings, including windbreaks and street furniture specially designed by the architect Inessa Hansch, extend from the landscape to the footpaths criss-crossing the town.
