The Podium Building is among the first projects implemented in the third district of the HIA Airport City, home to the headquarters of the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority. The building features a green roof: here, eight gardens brighten the vast hardscape rooftop, forming peaceful spaces for pause and calm – veritable havens at the heart of this bustling campus. The rooftop edges are designed with hidden “ha-ha” walls, which are low enough to maintain unobstructed views out to the vast surrounding landscape. At the center of the gardens, a series of shade structures and windbreak structures protect users from both hot air currents and the scorching sun. These structures and the accompanying densely planted vegetation ensure that temperatures remain comfortable in the greened rooftop nooks. The rooftop nooks are crisscrossed with a network of pathways, making the spaces easily accessible. Here, unique paving patterns form textural surfaces, providing a visible pop of depth and complexity in each nook. The paths subject to heavier foot traffic are smoother and more even. Bush-hammered paving visually and texturally eases the transitions into the more secluded, intimate spaces sprinkled throughout the gardens.
