Within the context of the old port of Eilandje's reconversion, six housing towers were built between street and inner harbor along the Kattendijkdok Westkaai. At variable intervals, five public gardens punctuate the constructed whole. In the spirit of the master plan we laid out in 2003, these gardens create an atypical link between the “disproportioned” scale of the old industrial port and these new public spaces.
The device of gardens consists here of very thickly grouped together areas of woodland, whose presence is consequently immediate. These dense areas create an intermediate sense of scale for the gardens, “sculpting” the space and shaping its pathways. The interplay between empty and full determines which places are accessible and allows for views of the inner harbor and the landscape in the distance.
For the most part closed off on the side facing the street, the public gardens open here and there on the inner harbor side, creating lawns of various sizes, and of varying intimacy. There are areas for children's games as well as other activities. The largest lawn serves as the center of neighborhood life. Large events can take place here, such as concerts or open-air cinema.
